1. What is the Tesla Powerwall 2?

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is an AC-coupled battery system. The Powerwall stores excess energy produced by your solar PV system and uses it to power your home appliances, whenever your solar panels are not able to (i.e during cloudy weather, rainy days, or at night). The Tesla Powerwall 2 can help power essential loads in the event of a blackout.

Can A Tesla Solar Battery Help Save Me Money?

Definitely. A solar battery increases your “solar self-consumption” and reduces the need to import energy from the grid. While solar panels can help offset your energy usage during daytime, the panels do not produce energy at night. Most homes experience peak energy usage at night when the whole family is back home from work or school. Family members watch TV, listen to music, use their laptops for homework, or cook in the kitchen. During this period, your energy system will import electricity from the grid because there is no solar energy being produced. This means that your household will likely see high electricity bills, even with existing solar panels in place. However, with the help of Tesla Powerwall, you can supply your home with solar energy all day and night, maximising your energy bill savings. We’ll show you a real example of our customer who has a solar system, complete with a Tesla Powerwall battery. The charts below reflect the monitoring data from his solar system. From the charts, you can see that his daily home energy usage is almost completely supported by solar energy (day and night).

Chart A: From the chart, we can see the daily energy usage patterns in the household. This gives us an indication of how much energy production is needed to offset this usage.

Chart B: Solar panels are producing solar energy. The home is getting enough solar energy to supply its energy usage in the day.

Chart C: This chart shows that the Tesla battery supplies the home with power during the early mornings, evenings and nights, when solar energy production level is zero. In the middle of the day, when the solar energy production is at its maximum, excess solar energy goes into charging the Tesla Powerwall battery.

Chart D: This chart shows that even after charging the Tesla Powerwall battery, there is still excess solar energy production that is not being utilised by the home. So, this excess solar energy is then fed back into the grid, earning the owners some energy credits.

2. What are the best features of Tesla Powerwall 2?

A. Liquid Cooling System – Keeps the battery at an optimal temperature.

B. Backup Protection – The Tesla Backup Gateway controls the connection to the grid, automatically detecting outages and providing a seamless transition to backup power.

C. Compatible with solar inverters from SMA, SolarEdge, Fronius, Enphase, etc.

D. Use the Tesla app to manage system’s performance and operating modes such as Backup Reserve, Self-Powered and Time-Based Control.

E. 100% depth of discharge.

F. Water-resistant and dust proof, making it suitable for outdoor installations.

G. Child & Pet Friendly – No exposed wires or hot vents.

3. What battery cell chemistry does the Tesla Powerwall use?

The Powerwall batteries use Li-ion NMC or Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt oxide chemistry. According to Lithium-Ion Battery Test Centre Australia, the Li-ion NMC battery chemistry offers good performance across metrics such as energy density, power density, lifespan, and thermal stability. The production of these battery types is increasing due to its suitable across various applications, especially electric vehicles.

4. What is the Tesla Backup Gateway?

The Tesla Backup Gateway manages connection to the grid, and automatically switches to backup power when it detects a power outage. The Gateway communicates directly with the Powerwall, allowing you to monitor energy consumption and manage backup energy reserves. The Gateway also receives over-the-air updates for the battery system and can support up to 10 AC-coupled Powerwalls.

5. What is the price of a Tesla Powerwall?

Around $15,000 – $16,000 including installation by a Certified Tesla Powerwall Installer. This certification is only awarded to installers who have demonstrated high standards of installation and good customer support service.

6. What is the warranty on a Tesla Powerwall?

The Tesla Powerwall comes with a 10-year product warranty. According to the Tesla website, “to secure the full 10-year warranty for Powerwall, it must be reliably connected to the Internet to allow remote firmware upgrades from Tesla.”

7. Is there a waiting period for a Tesla Powerwall?

The waiting period can range from weeks to months. This waiting period is applicable to every Tesla Powerwall installer in Australia. This is because the Tesla batteries are in high demand globally and therefore supplying each order can take up time. We are determined to get your Tesla Powerwall to you as soon as possible. Upon placing an order, our operations team will contact you with an estimated waiting period for your Tesla Powerwall installation.

8. How loud is the Tesla Powerwall?

This is a genuine concern from some home or business owners, who are worried about potential noise disturbance from high powered electronics.
According to Tesla, “the Powerwall has a pump and fan that produce a gentle hum during operation, comparable to a typical refrigerator.” This needs to be taken into consideration when choosing where to install a Powerwall. During an installation, customers let us know their preferred Powerwall installation location. Our engineers inspect the area and give their assessment of the suitability of the location, ensuring that it complies with Tesla’s requirements.

9. What is the Tesla App?

The Tesla App allows solar users to monitor real-time performance of their solar system. You can also get a comprehensive insight into your solar energy system and monitor how much energy is being produced, stored, imported, and used. The App also allows you to optimize the control mode of your Powerwall.

10. Can Tesla Powerwall provide backup power for my entire house during an outage?

It really depends on how much energy is needed to support your household energy usage.
One Tesla Powerwall battery provides 5kW (13.5 kWh) of continuous power. You can back up any appliances as long as the total power usage does not exceed the Powerwall’s 5kW of continuous power.

During power outages, we recommend that you backup essential appliances only. This way, the energy stored in your Tesla Powerwall will be supplied to appliances that are critical to your safety, health, and communication. We can design the Tesla installation to back up essential appliances such as lighting, fridge, and power outlets while leaving out appliances like air conditioner, washing machine, hi-fi systems and so on.

11. How do I get a Tesla Powerwall for my home or business?
