3. Solar panel warranties

 

Every brand of solar panel will include two warranties: 

 

  • Product warranty (which can range from 10 to 25 years).

  • Panel performance warranty, which is typically 25 years.  

 

The warranty that promises good performance for solar panels might sound really good, but it’s not that helpful. This is because most solar panel makers are experts at avoiding performance warranties, and it’s really hard to actually get them to honor these warranties. And even if you somehow manage to make a claim, you probably won’t get much compensation.

What you should be more concerned about is the product warranty. It’s better because it’s easier to use if you need to make a claim, and it covers any issues with how the panel was made. Instead of having to send the panel back to the maker, try to get a product warranty that lets you get the panel fixed where it is.

 

Before, only the more expensive solar panels with warranties of 15 years or more were around. But now, solar panels that are more affordable are starting to step up their game and offer warranties that are about as long.

 

4. Solar Panel Efficiency

 

Solar panel efficiency is a crucial metric that measures how effectively a panel converts sunlight into electricity. Higher efficiency panels can generate more power with the same amount of sunlight, making them an attractive choice for roofs with limited installation areas. Efficiency is impacted by factors like cell technology, materials used, and manufacturing processes. While efficiency gains are desirable, it’s essential to consider the balance between efficiency and cost, as higher efficiency often comes with a higher price tag.

5. Power Output at STC

 

This number indicates the size of the solar panel; for instance, a solar panel rated at 390 watts has a 390 watt power output under typical test settings.  This is taking place in ideal weather, with a panel temperature of 250 degrees Celsius and a clear, sunny day.

 

When evaluating solar panels, it’s essential to consider their STC power output to understand their potential energy generation capacity.

6. Temperature Coefficient of Pmax

 

Solar panels operate under various environmental conditions, including temperature changes. The temperature coefficient of Pmax quantifies how much a panel’s maximum power output decreases as its temperature rises. A lower temperature coefficient indicates that the panel’s performance is less affected by temperature fluctuations, making it more suitable for locations with varying climates.

7. Power Tolerance

 

The solar panel’s output will fluctuate within this range in relation to the standard test conditions. Better solar panels these days will have a power tolerance of 0% + 5 or 10 watts. This guarantees that the panel will always operate at or above its rated output.  Always choose a solar panel with a power tolerance of 0% and with only a plus side (no negative power tolerance) if you have the option.

8. Annual Degradation

 

Over time, solar panels undergo gradual performance degradation due to various factors, including exposure to the elements and the nature of their materials. The annual degradation rate signifies how much the panel’s efficiency is expected to decline each year. High-quality panels typically have lower degradation rates, ensuring more stable and consistent energy production throughout their lifespan.

 

The best solar panels decay at a rate of about 2.5% per year, whereas ordinary panels degrade at a rate of at least 5% per year.
