Email Address – Use the same email address that you used for your activation confirmation email.
Password – To create a password, tap on ‘Forgot Password’ in the Tesla app. If you experience issues resetting your password, you can contact Tesla support for help.
Connecting Your Powerwall 3 to the App
For Tesla Powerwall 3 with Tesla Inverter – The Powerwall 3 connects directly to the app through Wi-Fi or Ethernet via the Tesla inverter, allowing you to track its performance seamlessly.
For Third-Party Solar Inverters – If your system uses a third-party inverter, you will need to connect it to the Gateway 1 or 2 device, which links to your home network via Ethernet and communicates wirelessly with your Powerwall. Setup instructions are available in the Owner’s Manual.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if I lose Powerwall monitoring?
For Tesla Inverters – Ensure the Powerwall and inverter are both powered on and connected to your home router or modem. If you lose connection, follow the troubleshooting steps in the app to reconfigure network settings.
For Third-Party Inverters – Check that the Gateway is powered on and connected to your home router. If the Gateway is too far from the inverter, move it closer to improve the connection. If you still have issues, refer to the troubleshooting guide for support.
Can I monitor my Powerwall 3 on my desktop?
Currently, monitoring is only available through the Tesla app. Tesla does not offer web or desktop-based monitoring for Powerwall. However, you can manage your Tesla Account and view your Powerwall-related billing and documents on a desktop.
Why can’t I see my Powerwall 3 in the Tesla app?
If your Powerwall isn’t showing up, make sure you are logged into the app with the same email address associated with your Tesla Account. If the Powerwall still isn’t visible, try signing out and signing back in to refresh the product list.
Back Up – In the event of a grid failure, the Powerwall 3 automatically provides uninterrupted backup power. Once the grid goes down, the system kicks in without any action required from the homeowner.
How Powerwall Provides Backup Power
When the grid fails, your Powerwall disconnects from the grid and takes over, powering your home with its stored energy.
If your system is connected to solar, Powerwall can recharge itself from your solar panels, keeping your home powered by solar energy even during an outage. A typical solar system without a Powerwall won’t function when the grid is down.
If your Powerwall reaches its full charge and your solar system continues to produce more energy than needed, it will instruct your solar inverter to reduce or stop energy production to avoid overcharging. Once the battery has enough room for more energy, the inverter will start producing power again.
Backup Power Notifications
If the grid is down for more than five minutes, the Tesla app will send you a notification, allowing you to adjust your energy usage. You will receive another notification when the power is restored. To ensure you get these alerts, go to Settings in the Tesla app and select Notifications. You can customise your preferences to receive updates about power outages, and make sure your device settings allow notifications from the app.
Managing Power Usage During an Outage
During an outage, you can back up any appliances as long as their combined power usage doesn’t exceed your Powerwall’s capacity. To make the most of your backup power, avoid using high-energy appliances such as air conditioners, EV chargers, electric heaters, and dishwashers.
Powerwall can also work with Tesla vehicles to charge them without exceeding the power available for your home.
Preparing for a Power Outage
In the event of a storm or other extreme weather, outages may last longer than expected and solar production may decrease. Before an outage, plan to complete energy-heavy tasks, like laundry or cooking, to reduce power demand during the outage.
If you live in an area prone to frequent outages, consider setting a higher Backup Reserve in the Tesla app. The Storm Watch feature will automatically prepare your system for a possible outage during severe weather events.
Make sure to clear any obstructions from your solar panels, like leaves or snow, especially during bad weather, to ensure optimal energy production.
Avoiding Overloading Your Powerwall
Attempting to use more energy than your Powerwall can provide, especially during a power outage, may cause it to stop supplying power. If this happens, turn off high-power appliances, and the Powerwall will attempt to restart within a minute. If it doesn’t, you can manually restart it.
