RK Solar & Consulting takes pride in providing customised solutions to suit the energy requirements of our customers. No two houses have the same energy needs and therefore there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach to solar or batteries.

Solar Battery Installation in Collaroy, NSW

A customer of ours had recently contacted us to discuss the option of adding a solar battery into his existing solar system. We had previously installed solar panels (Q-Cells & Enphase Solar system) on his roof, and therefore most of his daytime energy usage was already supported by solar power. This new battery system would consist of:

  • 3 X Sungrow SBR Battery 3.2 kWh
  • 1 X Sungrow SBR Control Module
  • 1 X Sungrow 1phase Hybrid inverter ( SGR-SH5.0RS)

Benefits of Installing A Solar Battery

1) Reduce Reliance on the Grid:

The house was still importing electricity from the grid for nighttime energy usage. A battery would reduce the need to import from the grid when solar panels are not generating enough energy.

2) Store Excess Solar Energy:

Excess energy from solar production was being fed back into the grid. While this does offset his energy bills, the customer could get much higher savings by storing excess energy in a solar battery and using it whenever needed.

3) Not Getting a Good Feed-in Tariff:

Recently a lot of energy retailers have reduced the feed-in rates that they were offering to their clients. This means that you are buying energy at a higher rate than what your selling rates are. Hence a lot of customers opt to store the green solar power into batteries and use it at night or when electricity rates are high (peak rates).

4) Emergency Electricity During Power Outages:

Solar batteries can help you access emergency power supply during blackouts. When your solar battery is fitted with blackout protection, your solar system can store and utilise solar power during power outages. This battery system can also be programmed to power certain circuits in your home, so you can choose which important appliances can receive power during a blackout.

Solar Battery Installation in Collaroy: Challenges

To find the right kind of battery system for his home, there were some important challenges we needed to consider:

  • Coastal installation – Risk of degradation of solar battery

The customer’s house was about 500m from the coast. This meant that there was high salt content in that environment which could degrade components of the battery. So, we needed to choose a battery that had high resistance to salt corrosion.

  • Finding the right solar battery storage system

The average excess solar power generated in his home was around 12kWh. So we needed to find a battery that could be fully charged with this excess energy. We also wanted a battery that can be upgraded easily in the future.

Solar Battery Installation: Our Solution Process

1) Overview Of Energy Consumption Pattern

To find the right solar battery for our customer, we first had to analyse his electricity bills for the past 12 months. This gave us a good overview of his solar energy production, usage, consumption and export levels.

From that, we concluded that the average excess solar power during the day was around 12kWh. Instead of exporting this 12kWh excess energy to the grid, it could be stored in a solar battery and used when the solar panels were not generating energy. This would allow the customer to be less reliant on the electricity grid and bring him significant savings in energy bills.

2) Solar Battery With High Anti Corrosion Rating

After a lot of research, our team of engineers decided to use a Sungrow battery for this installation.

The Sungrow batteries have one of the highest anti-corrosion ratings (rated at C5). This means that the batteries are suitable for environments with very high pollution and or significant effects of chlorides, e.g., coastal areas. The batteries are also built with a durable finish and have a high anti-corrosion enclosure. This gave us added confidence that the battery would last long and perform well for years to come.

3) Flexibility For Future Solar Upgrades

One key feature of the Sungrow battery is that it has a stackable modular design. If the customer plans to upgrade their solar system in the future, they can easily add additional modules to this battery and increase the capacity. Along with the battery, we installed a Sungrow Residential Hybrid Inverter. The inverter is ideal for both retrofitting and new installations. It also provides the flexibility to expand the solar system. If the customer wants additional solar panels, the panels can be installed and directly connected to this hybrid inverter.

4) 24/7 Solar Energy Monitoring

sungrow solar monitoring

Using the iSolarCloud platform, our customer will be able to monitor their system’s performance. This includes data such as level of solar energy production, consumption, battery charge & discharge, and energy export.

From the image, you can see that the solar battery is discharged during periods where solar energy is insufficient to support the energy usage at home. This occurs mostly at night or early hours in the mornings. Around midday, when the solar panels are performing at full capacity, excess solar energy is used to charge the batteries.

This means that customer has significantly reduced his reliance on the grid and is almost fully running his home on solar power.

5) Strong Australian Warranties

Both the Sungrow battery & the Residential Hybrid Inverter come with a 10-year product warranty. For added peace of mind, RK Solar & Consulting offers customers a 10-year installation warranty. This is a testament to our belief in our workmanship, service and the products we offer.  We also have a dedicated team that continues to provide after-sales support for customers, long after the installation is complete. We aim to make the transition to solar a seamless process for everyone.
