Upgrading an Existing Solar System with a Battery in St Ives

Enphase Battery Installation For St Ives Home Solar System

Project Overview

This project is about a solar battery upgrade for homeowner Oliver in St Ives, NSW. Oliver already had a high-quality solar panel system with Enphase microinverters, installed in 2022, which delivered reliable electricity and efficient panel-level performance.

Over time, as his energy usage changed and electricity prices continued to rise, Oliver recognised the need to make his system more efficient and useful. While his solar panels performed well during the day, adding battery storage would allow him to store excess energy for use later.

The primary objective of this upgrade was to maximise solar self-consumption, reduce dependence on grid electricity, and provide a consistent, reliable energy supply throughout the day and night. Additionally, installing a battery system would offer backup power during outages, ensuring that essential appliances could continue operating when needed.

To achieve this, RK Solar designed a battery system tailored to Oliver’s existing setup and energy needs. The system was configured to work with his Enphase microinverters, ensuring compatibility, efficiency, and long term reliability.

The upgrade included the installation of the Enphase IQ System Controller Gateway 3, which manages the flow of energy between the solar system, battery storage, the home, and the grid. It also enables the system to automatically provide backup power during grid outages.

In addition, two Enphase IQ Battery 5P units were installed to provide reliable and scalable energy storage. These batteries are designed for high efficiency, safety, and flexibility, enabling the system to store excess solar energy generated during the day and make it available for use in the evening.

To support the installation and ensure an optimal system layout, a 21-metre cable run was added. This allowed for proper positioning of the battery and control components while maintaining safe and efficient connectivity throughout the system.

Overall, this upgrade makes the existing solar system more efficient and functional. By combining solar panels with battery storage and improved energy management, the system now delivers greater energy efficiency, lower electricity bills, and increased control over electricity usage.

Why Understanding the Existing Solar System Is Important

Oliver’s home already had a solar panel system installed in 2022 using Enphase microinverter technology. In the solar system, one central inverter controls all panels, but with microinverters, each panel converts its own DC electricity into usable AC electricity.

Panels work independently – Each panel produces electricity on its own, so if one panel is shaded or underperforming, it doesn’t affect the others.

More reliable electricity – The system continues to operate efficiently even if one panel experiences a problem.

Better monitoring – Homeowners can view detailed performance data for each panel, making it easier to track energy production and identify issues early.

Because Oliver’s system already had these advantages, it was easy to add battery storage. Enphase systems are designed to work effectively with batteries, allowing extra energy to be stored and used later, further reducing electricity bills and providing backup power when needed.

Why Upgrade with a Solar Battery?

Solar panels generate electricity during the day when the sun is shining but not all of this electricity is used immediately. Without a battery, any excess energy is wasted instead of being stored for later use. When the sun isn’t shining like in the evening or on cloudy days, homeowners must rely on grid electricity, which can limit the savings and benefits of having solar panels.

Oliver decided to add a solar battery to his system to address these issues and maximise the energy his panels produce. The battery allows him to store excess solar electricity during the day and use it whenever needed, reducing waste and lowering electricity bills.

Key Benefits of Adding a Solar Battery

Maximise Solar Energy Usage – By storing extra energy generated during the day, the battery allows it to be used at night or on cloudy days.

Without a battery, this extra energy cannot be used later. With a battery, it is stored and available when needed, such as in the evening when most appliances are in use.

This helps homeowners use more of the electricity their solar panels generate, making the system more efficient and effective throughout the day and night.

Reduce Electricity Bills –

By using stored solar energy, you rely less on electricity from the grid, which helps lower your monthly power bills.

A battery is especially useful during peak times when electricity costs are higher. It allows you to use your stored energy instead of paying more, helping you save money while maintaining a steady and reliable power supply.

Backup Power During Outages –

With the Enphase IQ Battery, the system can supply power during a blackout. Appliances such as the fridge, lights, and other essentials continue running even when the grid is down, keeping your home powered when you need it most.

Greater Energy Independence –

Adding a solar battery allows you to use more of your own solar power and rely less on the electricity grid.

You can control when and how you use energy, saving money when electricity prices are high. It also helps home stay powered even if there are outages or grid issues.

Overall, upgrading with a solar battery lets homeowners like Oliver to use all the energy their solar panels generate. It helps reduce electricity costs and keeps the home powered when needed, making the energy system more efficient and cost-effective.

System Components Installed

To meet Oliver’s energy goals, a carefully selected set of components was installed.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P (2 Units)

The Enphase IQ Battery 5P is a fully integrated AC battery system designed for high performance, safety, and convenience. It features six embedded IQ8D-BAT microinverters and uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry for long-lasting reliability and maximum safety. The battery uses passive cooling with no moving parts or fans and uses wired communication for fast and consistent connectivity. Components can be replaced if needed, and installation is quick and easy with a plug-and-play design.

Homeowners also benefit from remote software and firmware upgrades, along with monitoring and control through the Enphase App. The IQ Battery 5P supports backup power (with IQ System Controller 3 INT), self-consumption, and time-of-use (TOU) modes. It also provides grid-forming capability for backup operation. The system is backed by a 15-year limited warranty, covering up to 6,000 cycles.

With two batteries installed, the system provides sufficient storage to power essential loads and improve overall energy efficiency.

Enphase IQ System Controller Gateway 3

The Enphase IQ System Controller 3 connects the home to grid power, IQ Batteries, and solar panels with microinverters, making it a key component for managing energy flow. It is required for all new installations using IQ8 Series Microinverters. The controller functions as a microgrid interconnection device (MID), automatically detecting grid outages and switching the home energy system to backup power.

It combines interconnection equipment into a single enclosure, simplifying installation for both solar and battery systems. The system uses a control cable for wired communication, connects to the main load panel, and supports backup for both solar-only or solar-plus-battery configurations. It also includes a neutral-forming transformer for split-phase 120/240 V backup operation and a system shutdown switch to safely disconnect PV and battery systems.

With a dedicated IQ Load Controller, homeowners can prioritise power to critical loads during an outage. The controller also features integrated hold-down functionality, supports conduit entry from multiple sides, and uses a Power Control System (PCS) to manage solar and storage operation based on the main panel rating. The IQ System Controller 3 comes with a 10-year limited warranty and is required for Sunlight Jump Start functionality.

Additional Cable Run (21 Meters)

A 21-metre cable run was included in the installation to ensure the battery system components could be positioned in the optimal locations for safety and performance. This additional cabling allows flexible placement of the batteries and controller, ensures the installation meets safety standards, and supports efficient energy transfer throughout the system. Proper system design and cabling are essential for long-term performance, reliability, and overall safety.

How the Upgraded System Works?

The upgraded solar system combines solar panels, batteries, and smart controls to provide the home with more reliable and efficient power. Here is how it works –

The solar panels generate electricity from sunlight. This electricity is used immediately to power lights, appliances, and other home devices.

Any excess electricity that isn’t used immediately is stored in the batteries, allowing it to be used later instead of going to waste.

When the sun goes down, the home can use the electricity stored in the batteries, reducing the need to draw power from the grid and saving money.

If the power goes out, the batteries automatically supply electricity, keeping lights, fridges, and other essential devices running so the home remains powered.

With this system, the home can maximise its solar energy use, reduce electricity bills, and have power available whenever it’s needed.
