Caringbah High School wanted to lower their power bills and do something good for the environment. Like many schools, they were looking for ways to save money while teaching students about sustainability and clean energy.
Installing solar panels was the perfect solution. Solar power is clean, renewable, and helps reduce electricity costs. Now, the school produces its own energy from the sun instead of relying only on the grid.
This solar project was made possible thanks to Kal Glanznig, a former school prefect. He was passionate about climate change and encouraged the school and community to support solar energy. He said, “It was a very easy sell.”
What Was Installed – 93kW Solar Power System
RK Solar & Consulting won the tender to install a solar power system at the school. The project was funded 50/50 by the NSW Department of Education and the P&C Association.
System Details:
System Size: 93kW commercial solar system
Panels: 284 Trina Solar 330W panels
Inverters: SMA TRIPOWER CORE 50kW + STP 25kW
Installed On: School Hall and Main Building rooftops
Expected Lifespan: 20–30 years
Solar panels generate free electricity from sunlight. This means the school uses less power from the energy provider, lowering their electricity bills.
Estimated Savings: $15,385 per year on electricity
Payback Period: Around 6 years
After Payback: Electricity is almost free
Extra Savings: Can be used for tech upgrades, school supplies, or building improvements
With power prices rising, solar helps schools lock in cheaper energy costs and become less dependent on the grid.
Solar Rebates and Tax Benefits for Schools
There are government rebates and solar incentives that reduce the upfront cost of installing solar panels. Schools can also claim depreciation benefits, saving more over time.
By going solar, schools can cut costs and improve their financial future.
Energy Independence and Better Reliability
With solar panels, the school produces its own energy during the day. This reduces their need to buy electricity from the grid when prices are high.
Solar energy gives schools more control over their power bills and improves energy reliability during school hours.
Long-Term Investment with Big Benefits
Caringbah High School will recover their solar investment in 6 years. After that, they will enjoy free electricity for up to 25+ years. The system also adds long-term value to the school buildings.
Helping the Environment
The school’s solar system saves around 178.1 tonnes of CO₂ each year. That’s like planting over 800 trees every year!
By choosing solar, Caringbah High is reducing pollution, protecting the planet, and supporting Australia’s clean energy future.
Solar Performance at Caringbah High School
Annual Energy Production: 133.4 MWh
Average Daily Production: 365.5 kWh
CO₂ Offset: 178.1 tonnes per year
Reliable and Low Maintenance
Modern solar panels are built to last and need very little upkeep. Most come with a 25-year warranty, so schools can count on long-term savings with minimal effort.
Inspiring Other Schools to Go Solar
Thanks to Caringbah High’s success, 25 other schools in NSW have started their own solar projects. One student’s idea helped create a ripple effect of cleaner, greener schools across the state.
Why Solar Energy Is Smart for Schools and Businesses
Solar power is one of the best ways to lower electricity bills and reduce carbon emissions. Whether you run a school, office, or factory, switching to solar is a smart move.
