The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a government initiative that makes it easier for Australians to buy and install home batteries. These batteries let you store the extra electricity your solar panels produce, so you can use it later instead of paying for electricity from the grid.
The program is being expanded with $7.2 billion in funding over the next four years, which means more Australians will get financial support to install these batteries. By 2030, this program is expected to help households and businesses save on electricity bills and be less dependent on the grid, giving them more energy independence.
From 1 May 2026, the way the Cheaper Home Batteries Program calculates rebates for home and business batteries will change. These changes are designed to make the program fair for all battery sizes, whether you have a small, medium, or large system.
The government has updated the rebate rules to –
Maintain a 30% rebate for most battery systems, ensuring households and businesses receive financial support.
Adjust rebates over time to keep the program efficient and sustainable.
Provide ongoing support for residential and commercial battery installations across Australia, helping more people access clean energy solutions.
The rebate is funded through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). STCs are created when a battery is installed, and the STC Factor determines how many certificates a battery can earn per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable capacity. The total number of STCs helps calculate the rebate amount for your battery system.
Starting 1 May 2026, the STC Factor will be updated –
It will reduce more frequently, every 6 months instead of remaining the same for longer periods.
It will reduce at a faster rate than before.
These updates help keep the rebate fair for all battery sizes and ensure the program continues to support new installations effectively.
What This Means for You
The rebate you receive will now depend on the STC Factor at the time your battery is installed. This means that installing your system earlier or later could slightly change the rebate amount.
Tip – Smaller batteries tend to get a higher percentage of the rebate, while larger batteries receive a smaller percentage, helping to keep the program sustainable for all Australians.
Below is the table showing the updated STC Factor changes –
Under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, government support is available for battery systems of up to 100 kWh. However, the rebate is only applied to battery capacities between 5 kWh and 50 kWh, and the rebate amount is calculated differently depending on the size of the battery system installed.
The rebate is calculated using the STC Factor, which is applied at different rates based on the battery’s capacity, as shown below.
Batteries Up to 14 kWh
Battery systems with a usable capacity of up to 14 kWh receive the maximum rebate support under the program.
100% of the STC Factor is applied
Designed for typical residential homes
Helps homeowners maximise savings when installing a smaller battery system
Ideal for storing solar energy for evening and overnight use
This level of support makes smaller battery systems more affordable and accessible across Australia.
Batteries Between 15 – 28 kWh
Medium-sized battery systems with a capacity between 15 kWh and 28 kWh receive a reduced rebate rate
60% of the STC Factor is applied
Suitable for larger homes, multi-family dwellings, and small businesses
Encourages efficient system sizing based on actual energy usage
Provides savings while supporting appropriate system selection
Batteries Between 29 – 50 kWh
Larger battery systems between 29 kWh and 50 kWh receive a reduced rebate rate.
15% of the STC Factor is applied
Designed for high-energy-use homes and commercial properties
Supports energy storage for businesses, workshops, and shared facilities
This approach ensures that larger systems continue to receive support.

Installing a home battery system offers a range of benefits for homeowners looking to get the most out of their solar power system and reduce reliance on the electricity grid.
1. Store Excess Solar Energy
A home battery allows you to store the extra electricity your solar panels generate during the day and use it later when solar production is low, such as in the evening or on cloudy days.
2. Reduce Electricity Bills
By using stored energy from your battery during peak periods or when grid electricity prices are high, you can significantly lower your electricity costs. A battery helps you make the most of your solar investment by ensuring less reliance on expensive grid power.
3. Increase Energy Independence and Backup Power
A home battery provides backup power during outages, keeping essential appliances and systems running when the grid goes down. This ensures energy security for your home or business, especially in areas prone to blackouts.
4. Support Renewable Energy
By storing and using your own solar energy, you contribute to clean energy adoption in Australia and reduce your household or business carbon footprint. Batteries play a key role in creating a sustainable energy future.
5. Maximise Savings with the Updated Cheaper Home Batteries Program
With the latest updates to the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, Australians can now access rebates and support for batteries of different sizes. This makes it more affordable to invest in energy storage, helping you save on energy bills and increase efficiency for years to come.
